What to do when you can’t afford to hire a graphic designer … but you still totally want a bad-ass brand.

How to DIY your business branding and logo

Let me start by saying … I think you’re pretty damn clever.

The fact that you’re here with me today tells me that you’re the kind of lady that’s not afraid to take control of her destiny. It also tells me that you’re savvy, switched-on and serious about your s-u-c-c-e-s-s.

Let’s take a moment – or two – to appreciate that, shall we?

You’re awesome.

And I know that you want the very best for your business, which means while you’d love to invest in a professional graphic designer to take your business and brand to the next level … you may not have the budget right now.

That’s okay. Seriously. I understand. I was once a start-up like you and I know just how resourceful you have to be in the early days of your business.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a killer brand that you and your target audience will love!

The key? DIY! But before you launch yourself at your computer, let me share three graphic designer tips with you.

Three rules for DIY branding

Rule #1: DON’T try to wing it!

If your plan is to boot up Wix or Adobe Suite and then wait for inspiration – and sudden brand expertise – to strike … well, lady, you might be waiting a while.

Sure, you might stumble across a good logo and brand if you sit at the computer for long enough. (Or trawl through Pinterest inspo for long enough.)

But you’ll also probably waste a heck of a lot of your time … and sanity.

Instead, don’t be afraid to do your research and wrap your head around the design basics first. Concepts like white space and font choices and complementary colour palettes might seem like a foreign language right now, but once you understand them I promise they will have the power to elevate your DIY brand design.

Rule #2: Please don’t attempt this at home alone.

Yep, you are mega talented. And you have an eye for design that nobody can dispute. But attempting your own graphic design without professional guidance is like … somebody watching a few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and deciding to sub for their local surgeon.

Sure, you might kinda know what you’re doing. But you haven’t had the training and experience that a professional has had.

So even if you can’t afford a graphic designer right now, you should still turn to one for guidance.

Psst. Got zero clue WHO the heck would be able to help you with something like that? Keep reading, sweet cheeks. ‘Cos I know a lady. Wink, wink.

Rule #3: Make it pretty … but strategic.

Something that often surprises graphic design DIY’ers is my approach to visual branding.

Which is that yes, your visual identity should ABSOLUTELY be drop-dead gorgeous … but it should, just as importantly (if not more so) be strategic too.

And by that I mean …

  • Your visual identity should convey your brand personality, values and message.
  • Your logo and visual branding should appeal to the right people, aka your target audience.
  • Your visual branding should be emotionally compelling.

And if your brain has seized up at even the idea of being pretty strategic (heh, see what I did there?) then don’t panic.
